Senior Regional ReporterLilly Knoepp is Senior Regional Reporter for Blue Ridge Public Radio. She has served as BPR’s first fulltime reporter covering Western North Carolina since 2018. She is a native of Franklin, NC who returns to WNC after serving as the assistant editor of Women@Forbes and digital producer of the Forbes podcast network. She holds a master’s degree in international journalism from the City University of New York and earned a double major from UNC-Chapel Hill in religious studies and political science.

A commissioner for the Eastern Band of Cherokee’s Alcohol Beverage Control commission has been arrested for misusing tribal funds. The Cherokee Indian Police Department announced on that Commissioner George Mitchell Littlejohn was arrested on six felony charges and five misdemeanor charges.

The Museum of the Cherokee People announced an entirely new exhibit to mark a new approach to sharing the history of the Eastern Band of Cherokee.The sov·er·eign·ty exhibition focuses on exploring the Eastern Band of Cherokee’s tribal sovereignty.The exhibit opens March 15. The museum is currently closed for construction.

Despite the Pactiv Evergreen mill operation closing, the company continues to operate the town’s wastewater management. It’s in this capacity that the Pigeon River is regularly tested by the state Department of Environmental Quality. This month, the department issued a violation of environmental standards for bacteria levels in the water.
