NC Lawmakers To Convene For Disaster Relief Special Session

State lawmakers will convene in Raleigh Tuesday to deal with disaster relief, but the agenda is open-ended.

Lame duck Republican Governor Pat McCrory called this gathering to deal with disaster relief stemming from Hurricane Matthew and mountain wildfires in western North Carolina, as well as “for the purpose of addressing any other matters the General Assembly elects to consider.”

That vague, open-door proclamation could include expanding the state Supreme Court, altering executive powers, or revisiting environmental deregulation that was abandoned in July.

Lawmakers have not confirmed, or ruled out the court-packing plan, which has been rumored for weeks.

The last time legislators held a special session they enacted House Bill 2, the law that requires people to use public restrooms that correspond to the gender listed on their birth certificate and limits anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people. That measure set off a national controversy.
