(5/7 3 p.m.) North Carolina has reported 980,498 confirmed cases of COVID-19, an increase of 1,932 cases from the day before. 1,006 are currently hospitalized statewide, a decrease of 25 from the day before. 12,780 have died of COVID-19 statewide, an increase of 42 from the day before. In the 13 North Carolina counties in Blue Ridge Public Radio's listening area, there are 50,912 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 860 deaths. That's an increase of 81 cases and 16 additional deaths from the day before.
(5/6 5:30 p.m.) Macon County Public Health will be pre-registering children aged 12 to 15 for the COVID-19 vaccination should their parents wish for them to be vaccinated. The FDA and CDC are expected to authorize the emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine for that age group next week.
There aren’t any Pfizer clinics currently planned in Macon County but parents who register their children will be notified once appointments for the Pfizer vaccine become available.
