Coming To BPR Airwaves In 2021: The Takeaway And The World

Matthew Septimus
Tanzina Vega, host of the daily show The Takeaway. The program debuts on BPR January 4, 2021.

Blue Ridge Public Radio is pleased to announce the addition of two national programs to our daily line-up of weekday news and public affairs shows: The Takeaway and The World. Beginning Monday January 4th, 2021, listeners can hear The Takeaway at 2:00 PM on BPR News and BPR Classic, and The World at 7:00 PM on BPR News.

Hosted by Tanzina Vega Monday through Thursday and Amy Walter on Friday, The Takeaway “convenes conversations across social divides to give listeners not just the information, but the complex, nuanced perspectives they need for understanding and participation. It features voices of Americans from all walks of life who may have different struggles and challenges but often speak to the same desires, dreams and hopes for the future of their families and communities.”

Formerly with CNN and The New York Times, Vega is an Emmy-award winning journalist recognized for her coverage of race, media and inequality. A co-production of PRX and WNYC, in collaboration with WGBH Radio Boston, the multiplatform show is created by a diverse team of producers and journalists using innovative audience engagement strategies to share compelling stories and connect listeners across the country.

Each Friday, get ahead of the news out of Washington, DC on Politics with Amy Walter. Known for her work with Cook Political Report and the PBS NewsHour, Walter “looks beyond the breaking news headlines for a deeper understanding of how Washington works, who's pulling the levers of power, and how it all impacts you.”

The World is an award-winning program from PRX and WGBH hosted by Marco Werman and heard on more than 300 radio stations. The daily show weaves together stories that go “beyond borders and boundaries, and fire up our curiosity about a fascinating, messy, contentious and beautiful planet. It's about exploration and risk, war and peace, fun and folly, and how our daily drama plays out around the globe.”

Politics with Amy Walter begins on BPR News Friday January 8, 2021.

BPR began a process of reviewing new national shows following the announcement by WUNC in November that the station is sunsetting of The State of Things on January 1st, 2021. While this is a tremendous loss of statewide news coverage and one of BPR’s local partnerships, it provided BPR with the opportunity to evaluate our programming schedule, look for opportunities to bring in new audiences and implement changes that align with our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion goals.

To ensure more diverse voices reach BPR’s audience, we are also adding an hour-long version of 1A at 8:00 PM, Monday-Friday. Hosted by Jenn White, the daily two-hour program airs live on BPR from 10:00 AM to Noon. The evening rebroadcast compiles the best segments of the live show, exploring policy, politics, technology, pop culture, sports and humor, while highlighting “what connects us across the fissures that divide the country.”

With these changes, Blue Ridge Public Radio will also be providing five continuous hours of classical music on BPR Classic, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM Monday-Thursday and from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Friday.
