Reports: North Carolina Out of the Running for Volvo Plant

News & Observer
Volvo Car Group plans to invest about $500 million to build its first auto factory in the U.S. in a bid to revive sales, which have tumbled over the past decade. Reports say North Carolina is no longer on the short list for the location of the factory.

Multiple reports are out that North Carolina is no longer in contention for a Volvo auto plant.  The company had announced a $500 million plant it was considering multiple states for, including North Carolina.  Now the News and Observer of Raleigh reports multiple anonymous sources have reported only South Carolina and Georgia are still in the running.  Governor Pat McCrory says the state is out of money to offer incentives and is imploring the legislature to offer more.  The House has passed what he wants, but the Senate remains reluctant.  Commerce Secretary John Skvarla says companies want certainty.  There are reports that Land Rover is considering North Carolina for a plant.  But the state has already lost the Volvo plant and was outbid in incentives for a new Mercedes headquarters that chose Atlanta.
