Legislature Getting Involved in Local Governments

Angie Newsome via carolinapublicpress.org

North Carolina Republican senators have entered again into affairs of local governments without being asked to do so, this time in Wake County and Greensboro.

The Senate planned Wednesday to debate and vote on measures that would rework the districts for Wake's commissioners and Greensboro's city council.

GOP senators filed the measures. The Wake commission would increase from seven to nine members, with the two of the positions being elected regionally. Greensboro's city council would be reduced from nine to seven voting members, and the mayor would no longer vote. District boundaries would be reworked for both bodies.

The senators sponsoring the changes argue they will lead to better representation for residents.

Democratic lawmakers and local leaders have complained the Republican-led legislature has interfered too much with cities.
