Tracy Samantha Calderón-Colón, local hairstylist and Swannanoa resident, remembers the day Helene hit.

“I just went home and I told my husband, ‘Maybe we should sleep in the basement tonight. It's supposed to be windy,’"  Calderón-Colón said.

In May, she shared her emotions of the days that followed with Buncombe County Special Collections Library.

The library has been collecting oral histories, photographs, community memories, and more, as part of the 'Come Hell or High Water' project to document Hurricane Helene.
