Greensboro has named Kamran Afzal as the new chief of police.

He succeeds John Thompson, who retired in February after more than 20 years with the department. Afzal has over three decades of experience in law enforcement.

He began his career with the U.S. Capitol police in 1991. He most recently served as the head of Dayton, Ohio’s police department.

Afzal will begin his duties in Greensboro on May 13.
