China consumes as much coal as the rest of the world combined – the country gets around 80 percent of its electricity from coal. But China’s coal consumption declined this year, partially due to a weakened economy. That, along with a commitment to cut down on their greenhouse gas emissions puts China in a position to help the planet in the fight against climate change.
Leigh Paterson of Here & Now contributor Inside Energy just returned from the Shanxi province, one of China’s main coal producing regions, where she found out how the country is using new technology to reduce emissions.
