(2/21 12:00 p.m.) North Carolina has reported 842,637 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, an increase of 2,541 from the day before. 1,647 people are currently hospitalized, a decrease of 61 from the day before. 10,926 have died from COVID-19 in the state, an increase of 30 from the day before. In the 13 North Carolina counties in Blue Ridge Public Radio's listening area, there are 43,504 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 743 deaths, an increase of 128 cases and 3 deaths from the day before.

(2/17 11:45 a.m.) Henderson County Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 Vaccine clinic at East Henderson High will operate on a 2-hour delay on Thursday, February 18th due to inclement weather. Anyone with an appointment is asked to arrive two hours later than their scheduled time. Anyone who needs to cancel their appointment is asked to call 828-585-4700.
(2/17 11 a.m.) Macon County Public Health is rescheduling first dose vaccine appointments for Wednesday and Thursday because of a lack of doses due to weather-delayed COVID-19 shipments. The health department asked the public to “Please bear with us as we navigate through this unplanned obstacle,” in a statement via email.
(2/16 6 p.m.) COVID vaccines will be set aside for school staff and childcare workers in Buncombe County when they become eligible for the shot under state guidelines beginning February 24th. The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners agreed on a plan offered by the county health department that will allocate 975 doses each week for school and childcare personnel. The same amount will be reserved for people 65 and older on the existing waitlist. Buncombe County commission chair Brownie Newman called it a balanced approach, “I think the scenario sounds very positive in terms of being able to begin getting some vaccines to school employees made eligible by the state plan, but also allowing us simultaneously continue to work through the group of older residents and the folks who are on the waitlist.” Distribution details are still being worked out. The hybrid plan would continue when Phase-3 of the state rollout plan opens up to all essential workers on March 10.

(2/16 9:30 a.m.) The Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is partnering with UNC Asheville to operate a COVID-19 immunization clinic on-campus starting later this week. The clinic will operate out of the Reuter Center. This week it will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weather permitting. The clinic will operate through May. The university says plans are in place to eventually be able to administer 300 vaccines a day at the clinic. Only those with an appointment for a vaccination will be allowed to enter the clinic, and under current state guidelines that's people aged 65 and over and all healthcare workers.
