The National Park Service has closed much of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

South of Asheville, the road is now closed from the French Broad River Overlook to its end at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  To the east and north of Asheville, the parkway is closed from US Route 74-A to Town Mountain Road, and then again from Ox Creek to Mount Mitchell.

The Park Service says the closures are to help national, state, and local efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19.  Visitor centers, picnic areas, public restrooms, and campgrounds had already been closed on the parkway.  On Tuesday, the U.S. Forest Service closed many popular recreations spots and trails in the Pisgah National Forest.
