All Hands On Deck: City, County Officials Meet To Prepare For Coronavirus

US Dept of State

Employers, health providers, and school districts are teaming up to coordinate a contingency plan -- in the event that Coronavirus spreads to Buncombe County.

On Monday, public information officers representing city and county stakeholders met to discuss what they have planned, should there be an outbreak.

"Because especially if you have something like the coronavirus that hits your community, it’s not just hitting one of us, it’s going to hit multiple of us. We have to work in collaboration of course, to make sure to keep as many of our students and staff members safe," Ashley Michelle Thublin, Asheville City Schools communication director, said.

Thublin says Asheville City Schools already has started increasing maintenance in its school buildings to thoroughly sanitize classrooms. Looking ahead, she says the district is considering options for distance learning, like materials students can take home and streaming video of lessons. She says the hope is that students don’t fall behind if they or their teacher contracts the virus.
