Asheville Water Testing Shows its Safe to Drink

Creative Commons

The City of Asheville says the latest testing shows tap water remains safe to drink.

The city says in a news release that testing yesterday on samples of the entire system showed an absence of bacteria or harmful substances. The sampling did reveal heightened levels of manganese. It’s a naturally occurring element found in produce and nuts.

But heightened levels of manganese could make chlorine less effective in suppressing bacteria in municipal water. The city says tests indicate the absence of bacteria, but water will continue to be tested daily, which is standard operating procedure.

The city says manganese usually settles out of the water supply but recent repair work increased water velocity, pushing it through the system. Mor information about the city's water testing can be found here
