The town council of Weaverville unanimously passed a resolution Monday evening saying the town is 'welcoming and diverse community' where all citizens can live and work 'without fear of physical violence, threats, harassment or intimidation."
The resolution comes in response incidents of hate speech and harassment in Weaverville since Donald Trump won the presidential election two weeks ago. Asheville mayor Esther Manheimer, in response to similar incidents that have occurred in her city, released a statement last week, saying 'disgraceful actions' against minorities and the LGBTQ community will not be tolerated. Manheimer urged residents to demonstrate that 'intolerance and hatred will not be accepted', language the Weaverville resolution adopted verbatim. Both towns urge residents who see such incidents to immediately report them to police.
