Asheville MLK Day Peace Rally Draws Hundreds

Hundreds of people gathered on a chilly Asheville afternoon today to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  WCQS’s Jeremy Loeb was there, and filed this report.

The annual Peace March and Rally began at St. James AME Church and ended at Pack’s Square downtown.  Temperatures were below freezing and the wind didn’t help, but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of Asheville native Cici Weston.

“I believe in the message and the dream of Martin Luther King.  And I believe in the diversity and the unification of all people.”

19-year-old Warren Wilson College student Joshua Perkins said it was his first rally like this.  He said he felt a responsibility to do something to honor Martin Luther King’s legacy.

“I have to put myself in the community.  I just can’t stand back and watch everyone else do it.  I have to do it myself.”

Those words will likely make organizers of the event very happy.  The MLK Association of Asheville and Buncombe County featured speakers that stressed tolerance, activism, and personal responsibility.  For WCQS News, I’m Jeremy Loeb.
