Asheville Art Museum Begins New Phase of Construction

Visitors to downtown Asheville will notice some new work taking place at the Asheville Art Museum at Pack Square.  WCQS’s Jeremy Loeb has details.

Construction workers were busy building scaffolding outside the museum.  It’s the launch of major construction at the building that once housed Pack Memorial Library.  The Italian Renaissance building opened in 1926 and was home to the library until 1978.

“It was pretty great this morning.  Everybody’s very, very excited about more visible work happening.  We’ve been working really hard all along but this is a very visible manifestation on this important corner that we’re moving forward.”

That’s museum director Pam Myers.  She says the preservation work to the historic building is long overdue.

“So you’ll see a cleaner building.  You’ll see some limestone repair.  You’ll see windows that need to be repainted and repaired and storm windows that are repaired.  So that’ll bring that building back to its glory and allow us to move into that building for programming more completely when the other parts of the building are under construction.”

Construction on the museum is expected to be completed by 2018 in time for its 70th anniversary year.  For WCQS News, I’m Jeremy Loeb.
