Barber Says NC Gov's Wait on Insurance Expansion Bad Excuse

The head of North Carolina's NAACP says Gov. Pat McCrory's plan to wait until at least summer before deciding whether to propose expanding health coverage to more uninsured people is a bad excuse not to act.

The Rev. William Barber said Monday that McCrory and legislative leaders keep "stonewalling" on Medicaid expansion.

Barber spoke before what the civil rights group calls a "people's grand jury" was to resume at the Legislative Building later Monday. Advocates are taking testimony from citizens and medical experts to make the case that state leaders are violating the state Constitution to fully help the poor and sick.

McCrory said last month he would wait until a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the federal health care law before announcing his decision. Justices hear oral arguments Wednesday.
