Idea Slowed to Shift NC Medicaid Program Oversight to Panel

Momentum has slowed for a proposal to shift control of North Carolina's Medicaid program from the Department of Health and Human Services to a new eight-member panel of health experts.

The General Assembly's government watchdog oversight committee met Wednesday but didn't vote as previously expected on legislation recommended last week by one of its subcommittees.

Committee co-chairman Sen. Fletcher Hartsell says it was decided more discussion was needed on the bill because several House members on the committee have been replaced in recent days. Two key House Republicans on the subcommittee are no longer on the panel.

Hartsell says the bill could be considered at a later meeting, but at least one House member and the state Medicaid director raised concerns about the measure Wednesday.
