Gov. Josh Stein is urging North Carolinians to stay off the roads this weekend ahead of the winter storm, which is expected to bring snow and freezing temperatures to much of the state.
Unlike last week, ice storms are not expected this weekend. Stein said that lowers the risk of widespread power outages, but unsafe driving conditions remain a top concern.
“So please, take a second look at your weekend plans,” he said. “Stay home and off the roads during winter weather.”
For Western North Carolina in particular, freezing temperatures pose a real danger. The National Weather Service has issued an extreme cold warning for the region.
“The temperature’s going to be bitterly cold – wind chill, maybe minus-20 degrees,” Stein said. “Obviously, the risks of frostbite, hypothermia become very elevated when you have temperatures that low.”
Stein said those who do need to venture out should make sure to dress appropriately and carry a well-stocked safety kit in their car in case they get stuck in the snow.
