Procrastinators have an extended grace period this tax season.

Following an earlier automatic extension to May 1, 2025, the Internal Revenue Service issued an additional automatic extension on the federal tax filing deadline on April 18. People and businesses in the state now have to file their 2024 federal and state returns by September 25, 2025.

If a taxpayer’s address is in a disaster area – like North Carolina – they will automatically get the extra time without having to ask for it.

Anyone who needs a tax filing extension can get it, but they must request the extra time by submitting a request online or by mail.

Filers who need help completing their returns can find free assistance through the Buncombe County Library. Several nonprofits, including the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide and VITA tax assistance, are working with the library, the IRS, the state Department of Revenue, and the Council on Aging to provide free tax preparations for taxpayers of low and moderate income with special attention to those age 60 and older.

Pisgah Legal Services also offers free assistance for tax preparation.

Taxpayers with federal disaster-related tax questions can call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect the latest extension.
