Asheville-area residents interested in enrolling in TSA PreCheck will be able to do so later this month without even entering the airport.

The program allows travelers to apply for a “known traveler number” and bypass certain airport security screening procedures, including the removal of shoes, laptops and belts. From April 15 to April 18, a TSA PreCheck mobile enrollment truck will be visiting Asheville Regional Airport, according to an announcement by the airport Tuesday.

The truck will be parked in the Cell Phone Lot across the road from the airport terminal. Pre-registration is required and can be completed on the airport’s website.

More than 18 million people nationwide are enrolled in TSA PreCheck, according to the Transportation Safety Authority.

Enrollment costs $78 and lasts for five years. The application includes a 10-minute fingerprinting process.

A record 2.2 million passengers traveled through Asheville Regional Airport last year. The airport is the third busiest in North Carolina and is currently in the midst of even further expansion. Construction recently began on a new passenger terminal that will increase the airport’s size by 150%.

TSA also installed new CT scanners at Asheville Regional Airport last year, making it possible for travelers to leave their electronics and other items in their bags while going through security.
