Deputy Chief Michael Lamb was named Interim Police Chief following the resignation of Police Chief David Zack.

A 25-year member of the force, Lamb was promoted to deputy chief in June.

“Interim Chief Mike Lamb has proven to be an exceptional leader and we are fortunate to have the opportunity for such a seamless transition in this critical role,” City Manager Debra Campbell said in a statement. “With his leadership, the support of the entire organization and the support of a high performing police executive leadership team, I know the police department is well positioned to maintain the most professional level of service to our community.“

Asheville Police Chief David Zack submitted his resignation on Friday, Dec. 15.

The resignation, first reported by Mountain Xpress, comes less than a week after Zack originally announced his intent to retire on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

The city is currently deciding on an interim police chief, according to city spokesperson Jessica Hughes. Hughes told BPR she expects the interim chief to be shared by the end of the day.

When asked why Zack resigned, Hughes said the city would not release any personnel records without a public records request.

“But it wasn't anything, you know, crazy or funky or weird,” Hughes said. “He’s just ready to retire and enjoy his Christmas and holiday.”

APD spokesperson Samantha Booth declined to comment, citing confidentiality of personnel matters.

Zack has been police chief since February 2020 when he became the fifth officer to lead the department in nine years.

Zack served as chief for the city of Cheektowaga, New York for nine years before coming to Asheville to replace Police Chief Chris Bailey, who only served in the role for two months before resigning in 2019 for personal reasons. Bailey's abrupt departure followed a tumultuous three and half year tenure of Tammy Hooper as police chief.

In recent years, APD faced numerous lawsuits related to the 2021 felony littering charges, as well as low employment numbers and a new drone program. APD also recently enacted a pilot program to increase police presence downtown.

Zack’s wife, Clarissa Hyatt-Zack, faced DWI charges in November after an accident near the airport, according to WLOS.
