Help for people affected by Canton mill closure

The closure of the Pactiv Evergreen paper millin Canton left many residents with questions and concerns about their finances, future employment and health care.

Haywood County is offering assistance through a helpline open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Callers can get guidance on a range of resources, and calls are confidential.

The helpline number is 828-356-2023.

The town of Canton will host a job fair featuring more than 30 businesses on Thursday, April 13, 2023 from noon until 7 p.m. at Canton Middle School.

Current information about employment opportunities, training and other resources is also available online at www.MillTownStrong.com, and on the Facebook page ‘Canton Mill Community Resources” at https://www.facebook.com/milltownstrong.

Local businesses are also stepping up to help workers affected by the closing. Champion Credit Union President Jake Robinson announced in March that the Tropical Storm Fred relief fund will expand to include members who are displaced workers from the paper mill.

Local politicians and community leaders said federal and state help will be on the way to Canton soon.
