Beginning next month, you’ll hear a new voice in the late afternoon hours on BPR. Jose Sandoval will soon sit in the host chair for Fresh Air and All Things Considered, 3 to 6 PM weekdays, anchoring the news magazine and producing daily news reports.

Join us in welcoming Jose to BPR and learn more about his work experience and what’s on his playlist these days.

Team BPR: Tell us about yourself, Jose.

Jose: I was born and raised in Elgin, Illinois. I have an AA from Elgin Community College and a BA from Illinois State University. I’m a first-generation graduate from my family and am so proud to be Latino! My first public media job was with WNIJ and their Hola initiative.

During my time there, I also interned with NPR in their Content Development department and was so lucky to help with Season 2 of Louder Than A Riot. I’m so excited to begin this journey and to be more involved in the community!

Team BPR: What attracts you to work in public media and for Blue Ridge Public Radio?

Jose: It’s the unbiased work that happens. Public media is at a point where change is happening and more diversity, equity, and inclusion is starting to become more apparent in other stations.

BPR really attracted me because of the growing news team and their commitment to expand coverage to diverse communities and embracing diversity.

Team BPR: When you’re not behind the mic or working on a story, what do you enjoy doing?

Jose: I love hiking, exploring new coffee shops, playing video games, traveling, watching the NBA/WNBA, and getting to meet new people.

Team BPR: What are you currently listening to?

Jose: I’m listening to a lot of Peso Pluma, Santa Fe Klan, and Bad Bunny on the music side.

In terms of podcasts, I’ve been listening to Alt.Latino (Shoutout Anamaria and Felix at NPR!), Code Switch, season 2 of La Brega, and podcasts from Enlace Latino NC.

Erin Adams served as BPR's first Director of Audience from August 2023 to March 2024.
