Asheville Moth StorySLAM

The wildly popular Asheville Moth StorySLAM is slated to continue for the foreseeable future.  The StorySLAM is a monthly competition, where the stage is open to any and all with a story to tell on the evening's theme. Themes for the rest of 2016 are listed further below in this article.

WCQS, which airs The Moth Radio Hour on Sunday nights, is the sponsor of the Asheville StorySLAM. Moth shows are renowned for the great range of human experience they showcase. Each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience.

Asheville is one of the newest Moth StorySLAM cities and the smallest city ever selected to participate. The Asheville StorySLAM happens (usually) on the 3rd Thursday of every month at The Mothlight at Mr. Fred's in West Asheville. Tickets go on sale one week before each show and sell out within minutes.

Asheville Schedule (with descriptions for interested storytellers)

Prepare a five-minute story about a neighborhood. Tell us a story about cops on the beat, kids on the stoop, block parties and other local flavors. The guy at the corner store, the church down the road, the playground down the block. Keeping up with the Joneses, glass houses, cups of sugar, banging on the ceiling, calling the cops or the girl-next door. *Tickets for this event are available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.

HEAT: Prepare a five minute tale about: jalapeno peppers, the sunburn you got before the wrestling match, heat waves, hot rollers, a corset or a scratchy sweater, why you'll likely burn in hell, your blood boiling encounter with a traffic cop, lingerie, leather or whatever else lights your fire and why playing with matches is a BAD idea. Scorch us with tales of your hotness. Or notness. *Tickets for this event are available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.

MONEY: Tell of cheapskates and big spenders, misers or millionaires. Pawn shops, spending sprees, eBay deals, and piggy bank funds. Selling your blood or buying a round for the whole bar. *Tickets for this event are available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.

BUSTED: Caught red-handed by THE LAW, your mama, your boss or the security camera! Tell us about being sent up the river, to the clink, the principal's office or into the apology zone OR tell us about your own personal Sherlock work: the stake-outs, shake downs, raids and strip searches that brought the perp to justice. *Tickets for this event are available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.

Prepare a 5 minute story about the job. Punching the clock or punching your boss. Speak of gainful, painful, or just-to-pay-the-rent employment. Office gossip, worksite conditions, business attire and harassment suits. From babysitting to air-traffic control. Stories about the boss, the office romance, finicky customers ..or dream jobs. *Tickets for this event are available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.
