Brown Bag is the 'American Idol' for regional songwriters, without instant fame or glamour

If you want people to hear some new songs you’ve written, there’s an open-mike around Asheville almost any night of the week. But for songwriters who want to put a little more on the line, the One Stop hosts a songwriting competition every Wednesday night throughout the fall.

This is the 11th year of the Brown Bag Songwriting Competition. Blue Ridge Public Radio arts producer Matt Peiken went to the opening night of the season to deliver this unique slice of local musical life. The competition continues weekly, except Oct. 25, until the Nov. 18 finals at Asheville Music Hall.
