Scandal, mayhem, and tradition in 'Lookaway, Lookaway'

Wilton Barnhardt's new novel, Lookaway, Lookaway, tells the story of the Charlotte-based Johnston family.

Tracing their roots back to to a Civil War general, the Johnstons are a family steeped in elegance and Southern gentility. But as their inherited wealth finally dwindles, tradition is overrun by scandal.

A story of the importance of appearances and the inextricability of family, Lookaway, Lookaway is told from nearly a dozen points of view, telling the story of the Johnstons through the eyes of everyone from the viciously polite matriarch to the indignantly liberal daughter to the romantic novelist uncle to the meek, homosexual son.

Lookaway, Lookaway captures a beautiful snapshot of a perfectly imperfect Southern legacy.

Wilton Barnhardt is scheduled to read excerpts from, and sign copies of his book tonight at 7 at Malaprop's.
