Mark Barrett is a native of Western North Carolina and has worked as a journalist in the region for decades. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, he reported for the New York Times from BPR’s studios and contributed to our coverage of Helene’s impact.
“At the Bat Cave Fire Department and Rescue, items donated by the public packed a room the size of a two-car garage. People could get everything from canned goods to chicken feed to granola bars to mustard.”
In this personal essay, Mark recalls many of the folks he encountered as he travelled, by car, and often by muddy hiking boot, around the region.
Produced for BPR by Land Deer.
Music by Night Walks, from the The Resonance Sessions, Helene benefit album.
