District 120 has been represented by Rep. Karl E. Gillespie (R-Macon) for two terms. Gillespie was elected as House Majority Whip in the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2023. In the last election cycle, his seat was uncontested. This year, Clay County Democrat Nancy Curtis is running against Gillespie.

Born and raised in Franklin, NC.
What is your top priority if elected?
Since I was first elected to the state legislature, my primary focus has been to ensure that the constituents of the 120th House District have a voice in Raleigh. I believe that providing exemplary constituent assistance is a fundamental responsibility for a civil servant. As long as I have the privilege of serving in this capacity, I will do all that I can to make sure that the voices of the people of far western North Carolina are represented in the decision-making process and that their needs and concerns are addressed to the best of my ability.
What do you wish the community knew about this office?
I would like to start off by saying that being a state legislator is the honor of a lifetime. I am incredibly thankful for this community that has placed their trust and confidence in me to do this job, and I believe that with the assistance of my team we have done it well. There are some sacrifices that you must make as a legislator. You are often away from home and the commute from Macon County, while worth every mile, can be challenging, and the time away from family certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. However, all of the personal sacrifices are worth it for the opportunity to represent the best district in North Carolina!
What is one thing that you want to say to voters?
I encourage my constituents to vote their conscience. The people of the 120th House District know the issues and know what is best for the district. I have full confidence that the choice they make will be an informed one, and at the end of the day the will of the people is what matters most.

What is your top priority if elected? Public Education
What do you wish the community knew about this office? That a state representative is your go to person for your needs and concerns. A state representative is for all of the people from all of their counties and whether those people voted for them or not.
What is one thing that you want to say to voters? I am one of you and will represent you proudly in the House of Representatives and Raleigh will know that the mountains go all the way to the Tennessee line, not Asheville.
