Members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee have been working to get Clingmans Dome, the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, renamed to its traditional Cherokee name. Tribal council voted unanimously in favor of the next step in the process.

Park officials announced that Rich Mountain Road in the Cades Cove, Tennessee area will be closed to all traffic starting Saturday, August 5, until further notice.

Starting March 2023, parking tags will be required to be displayed on any motor vehicle parked within the park boundary. Visitors will be charged $5 for a daily parking tag, $15 for a parking tag up to seven days or $40 for an annual tag. Before now there hasn’t been a cost to enter the park. The “Park it Forward” funds will be used in the park for facilities, trail maintenance and more.

In July, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Tribal Council voted to support a resolution to rename Clingmans Dome to Kuwohi – which translates to the Mulberry Place. Since then there has been growing support for the change. This week, Buncombe County Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of a resolution to support the Eastern Band’s efforts.
