Barnardsville resident Marcia Kummerle, 85, says her neighbors have been crucial to helping her dig out from the muck.

Shortly after the storm, BPR and Grist Reporter Katie Myers visited Barnardsville, a community about 30 minutes northeast of Asheville. She spoke with 85-year-old Marcia Kummerle, a fiber artist and goat breeder, who is no stranger to storms.

The music in this episode is "A love letter to Appalachia" by Dasher the band.
