New Mayors of WNC: Preston Blakely of Fletcher

Preston Blakely is in his first term as a city council member for the town of Fletcher.  But by the end of the year, the 27-year-old will be mayor of the town of over 8-thousand in Henderson County.Blakely won this month's election for mayor of Fletcher.  He spoke with BPR's Matt Bush about what he sees are the biggest issues he will tackle as mayor, what his most favorite part of Fletcher is, his grandmother WNC civil rights pioneer Oralene Simmons, and his masters degree work at Western Carolina University where he one of his professors was a certain political analyst very familiar to BPR listeners.  You can hear the whole interview above, and tune in every Monday morning at 7:45 to hear from another new mayor in Western North Carolina.   

Matt Bush joined Blue Ridge Public Radio as news director in August 2016. Excited at the opportunity the build up the news service for both stations as well as help launch BPR News, Matt made the jump to Western North Carolina from Washington D.C. For the 8 years prior to coming to Asheville, he worked at the NPR member station in the nation's capital as a reporter and anchor. Matt primarily covered the state of Maryland, including 6 years of covering the statehouse in Annapolis. Prior to that, he worked at WMAL in Washington and Metro Networks in Pittsburgh, the city he was born and raised in.
