Early voting starts next week for November local elections in Western North Carolina

Early voting in most of Western North Carolina begins next week! Are you ready to vote?

Early voting will be held Oct. 14 through Oct. 30, 2021. Find your early voting location here.

Four hundred and sixty-one municipalities in North Carolina have local elections on November 2nd. Hendersonville was the only municipality in the region to hold a primary election on October 5th for its city council seats.

Here’s a handy list of which elections are competitive prepared by Chris Cooper, Madison Professor of Political Science & Public Affairs at Western Carolina University.

Find out what races are on the ballot for election day in your county:

Mitchell

In Mitchell County, election day is November 2nd. There is no early voting or by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Bakersville Mayor, Bakersville Town Council and Spruce Pine Mayor, Spruce Pine Town Council.

McDowell

In McDowell County, election day is November 2nd. There is early voting and by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Marion Mayor, Marion City Council and Old Fort Mayor, Old Fort Alderman.

Polk

In Polk County, election day is November 2nd. There is no early voting or by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Columbus Mayor, Columbus Town Council and Saluda Mayor, Saluda City Commissioner, also Tryon Mayor and Tryon Board of Commissioners. (Saluda is in both Henderson and Polk Counties.)

Yancey

In Yancey County, election day is November 2nd. There is no early voting or by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Burnsville Mayor and Burnsville Council Members.  

Henderson

In Henderson County, primary election day is October 5th and election day is November 2nd. There is early voting and by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Saluda Mayor and Saluda City Commissioners and Fletcher Mayor, Fletcher Town Council (Districts 1 and 4), also Hendersonville Mayor and Henderson City Council (primary Oct. 5th). Laurel Park Town Council, Mills River Town Council , Flat Rock Village Council (Districts 1-3)  will also be on the ballot.   (Saluda is in both Henderson and Polk Counties.)

Buncombe

In Buncombe County, election day is November 2nd. There is early voting and by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Weaverville Mayor, Weaverville Town Council and Woodfin Alderman, Woodfin Sanitary Water and Sewer District Trustee.

Transylvania

In Transylvania County, election day is November 2nd. There is early voting and by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Brevard Mayor, Brevard City Council and Rosman Board of Alderman.

Haywood

In Haywood County, election day is November 2nd. There is early voting and by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Canton Mayor, Canton Board of Alderman, Clyde Board of Alderman and Maggie Valley Board of Alderman.

Swain

In Swain County, election day is November 2nd. There is early voting and by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Bryson City Alderman.

Jackson

In Jackson County, election day is November 2nd. There is early voting and by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Dillsboro Mayor, Dillsboro Council Members and Forest Hills Mayor, Forest Hills Council Members, Highland Mayor and Highlands Board of Commissioners also Sylva Mayor and Sylva Council Member as well as Webster Mayor, Webster Board of Commissioners. (Highlands is in Macon County but listed also in Jackson County on the NC BOE website.)

Macon

In Macon County, election day is November 2nd. There is early voting and by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Franklin Mayor, Franklin Town Council and Highlands Mayor, Highlands Board of Commissioners.

Graham

In Macon County, election day is November 2nd. There is early voting and by-mail voting for all locations except the Fontana Dam elections. Elections will be held for Robbinsville Mayor, Robbinsville Alderman, Fontana Dam Mayor and Fontana Dam Town Council as well as Lake Santeetlah Council Members.

Clay

In Clay County, election day is November 2nd. There is no early voting or by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Hayesville Mayor and Hayesville Town Council.

Cherokee

In Cherokee County, election day is November 2nd. There is no early voting or by-mail voting. Elections will be held for Murphy Mayor, Murphy Town Council and Andrews Mayor, Andrews Board of Alderman.

Update: A previous version of this story stated that there is no early voting or by-mail voting in Henderson County. The county does allow for early voting and by-mail voting.
