Welcome To 'The Porch'

At this particular moment in history, we think it's vital that we give ourselves more time to listen to what's happening in Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia.  To do that, Blue Ridge Public Radio is launching a new program from its news department - BPR News Presents: The Porch.

Why 'The Porch'?  Well, that’s the place where people gather to talk, about all things important...and maybe some things that are just slightly less so.  And that’s what we’ll be doing on 'The Porch', bringing you in-depth interviews, with newsmakers, community leaders, and personalities in our region.

The debut episode of 'The Porch' will air Friday morning September 4th at 9 a.m. on both of Blue Ridge Public Radio's channels in BPR's new local programming time slot.  An encore presentation will air Saturday September 5th at 3 p.m.  The debut episode of 'The Porch' includes interviews with Buncombe County elections director Corinne Duncan, the superintendent of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Cassius Cash, and Shirley Parks, the first Black principal post-integration in Macon County Schools.

'The Porch' will share the weekly local programming slot with BPR's two other podcasts, The Waters & Harvey Show and Going Deep: Sports in the 21st Century.  Rotated in with those shows will be other programming under the BPR News Presents umbrella.  That will include candidate forums for the upcoming election, and in-depth group discussions on community topics like our program A Conversation On Policing In Asheville from earlier this summer.  To find what will be airing each particular week, listen on-air, sign up for our weekly e-Newsletter, or follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).  And remember, you can listen to these shows anytime with the free BPR mobile app or through Apple Podcasts or Google Podcasts.  Thanks for listening!

Matt Bush joined Blue Ridge Public Radio as news director in August 2016. Excited at the opportunity the build up the news service for both stations as well as help launch BPR News, Matt made the jump to Western North Carolina from Washington D.C. For the 8 years prior to coming to Asheville, he worked at the NPR member station in the nation's capital as a reporter and anchor. Matt primarily covered the state of Maryland, including 6 years of covering the statehouse in Annapolis. Prior to that, he worked at WMAL in Washington and Metro Networks in Pittsburgh, the city he was born and raised in.
