Outdoor Groups Aim To Improve Diversity On The Appalachian Trail

Luz Lituma is co-founder of Latinx Hikers and Latinx Partnership Coordinator for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

A 2018 survey of Appalachian Trail thru-hikers shows 95 percent of them are white.   The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is partnering with nonprofits and outdoor groups to get more people of color outside and on the trails.

One of them is Latinx Hikers, and its co-founder Luz Lituma sat down with BPR’s Cass Herrington to discuss their efforts.

Lituma is also the Latinx Partnership Coordinator for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. She says she's currently helping develop curriculum on Leave No Trace principles and How to Backpack the AT for leaders of the group Latino Outdoors.
