Nature Center's Barred Owl Dies After Nearly Two Decades of Conservation Education

WNC Nature Center

The WNC Nature Center in Asheville is mourning the passing of its most senior resident. The Nature Center says in a news release its Barred Owl – Artemis – died after spending nearly two decades at the facility.

The Center says Artemis came to the Nature Center in 1999 with a wing injury that left him unable to be released and survive in the wild.

"We celebrate his long life, the impact he had on our community and beyond, and greatly appreciate his contributions to wildlife education," the WNC Nature Center said in a news release.

The Nature Center is home to more than 60 species of animals native to the Southern Appalachian Mountain Region.
