An influx of Haitian immigrants has been pouring steadily in Canada — mostly crossing illegally at the Quebec border — since last May. At one point they numbered up to 250 people a day, and prompted Canadian officials to create a staging area at the Olympic Stadium.
The numbers have since dwindled, but remain steady. About half the immigrants say they’re crossing out of fear of what will happen to them when their temporary protected status expires in 18 months.
