MANNA Foodbank is partnering with several organizations in Buncombe County for a hurricane relief drive. BPR’s Helen Chickering has details.
It’s a Thursday afternoon and the MANNA Foodbank warehouse is buzzing with activity. Volunteers from Givens Estates community in Asheville are hard at work.
Walt Justice is the unofficial crew chief.
“I’ve had a good life, this is a small way in which I can give back,” says Justice.
As volunteers help pack emergency food boxes that will go to local families, Darrell Sullivan says he’s thinking about victims of recent hurricanes.
“We know that some people are suffering, especially Puerto Rico right now,” says Sullivan.
And it’s that concern that inspired MANNA Foodbank and other organizations to come together and host a county wide hurricane disaster relief drive.
“This is one of those examples of a beautiful groundswell effort.” says Manna Foodbank CEO Hannah Randall.
Orange bins will be placed at various locations across the county including Buncombe County Schools, the Buncombe County Sheriff's office, Mission Health locations, and the Smart Insurance Company on New Leicester Highway.
The relief drive runs through Saturday. Soap and other personal hygiene items along with hand-held snacks are needed most. For a complete list, along with drop-off locations, click here
