Author Steven Nash On Zebulon Vance, Reconstruction, And The Parallels To Today

A1DKyY-hpEL.jpg

Author Steven Nash is well-versed on Zebulon Vance, and the post-Civil War period known as Reconstruction when Vance became a U.S. Senator and political powerhouse in North Carolina.  He wrote the book "Reconstruction's Ragged Edge: The Politics of Post-War Life in the Southern Mountains".  Nash was featured in the first of our two-part story on the Vance Monument in downtown Asheville.  The East Tennessee State University professor spoke at length with BPR's Matt Bush about Vance's life and political career, as well as the Reconstruction period and the parallels of the politics of that era and today.  (The interview was conducted the day after the shooting that wounded 5 people including Louisiana Republican Congressman Steve Scalise.  The shooting is referenced during the interview)
