Author Steven Nash On Zebulon Vance, Reconstruction, And The Parallels To Today

Author Steven Nash is well-versed on Zebulon Vance, and the post-Civil War period known as Reconstruction when Vance became a U.S. Senator and political powerhouse in North Carolina.  He wrote the book "Reconstruction's Ragged Edge: The Politics of Post-War Life in the Southern Mountains".  Nash was featured inthe first of our two-part story on the Vance Monument in downtown Asheville.  The East Tennessee State University professor spoke at length with BPR's Matt Bush about Vance's life and political career, as well as the Reconstruction period and the parallels of the politics of that era and today.  (The interview was conducted the day after the shooting that wounded 5 people including Louisiana Republican Congressman Steve Scalise.  The shooting is referenced during the interview)

Matt Bush joined Blue Ridge Public Radio as news director in August 2016. Excited at the opportunity the build up the news service for both stations as well as help launch BPR News, Matt made the jump to Western North Carolina from Washington D.C. For the 8 years prior to coming to Asheville, he worked at the NPR member station in the nation's capital as a reporter and anchor. Matt primarily covered the state of Maryland, including 6 years of covering the statehouse in Annapolis. Prior to that, he worked at WMAL in Washington and Metro Networks in Pittsburgh, the city he was born and raised in.
