A new bill would allow drivers who are deaf or hard of hearing to decide if they’d like a special symbol on their license to designate their disability. The symbol would be used as an indicator to law enforcement to ensure safe and effective communication.
The Senate Rules Committee approved the bill on Tuesday. The proposed bill comes almost a year after Daniel Harris, a Charlotte deaf man, was shot and killed after an altercation with a state trooper.
Along with the designation, the bill also includes training for current and incoming officers on how to appropriately interact with those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
