Vance County has received a donation of five acres for a new animal shelter. Now leaders need to raise $1.6 million for the building.
WRAL-TV reported the shelter hasn't been renovated since opening 40 years ago. It has space for about 85 animals and operates on a $389,000 budget.
The shelter will hold a fundraising event Saturday that includes raffles for prizes, professional photo sessions and other events. Its gas chamber will be destroyed Saturday and officials plan to turn into a work of art for the new building.
North Carolina shelters had to cease the use of gas chambers for euthanasia as of Feb. 15. Most shelter had already moved to lethal injection before that date. Shelters euthanize more than half the dogs and cats brought to them.
