State Parks Offering "First Day Hikes" for New Year

NC State Parks and Recreation
First Day Hike at South Mountains State Park

People with a little bit of adventure in them can start the new year off with a hike.  The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation is organizing free group hikes tomorrow called "First Day Hikes."  Spokesman Charlie Peek says he went on the first one four years ago and people really seemed to enjoy it.

Charlie Peek: "You get a reconnection with nature.  You get a little bit of fresh air and exercise.  And also, perhaps just as importantly, you get to kind of decompress after the holidays, and kind of reset a little bit for the new year."

There are more than 40 scheduled hikes ranging from short and easy to longer and more difficult.  Park facilities will be open on the 1st as well.  You can find more information about the hikes at ncparks.gov
