Republican lawmakers call on Governor Cooper to sign anti-immigration laws

Republican lawmakers held a surprise press conference this week in Raleigh to call for measures to limit immigration and require local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

"The Biden Administration has utterly failed to secure our border. Consequently, every state in the country is now a border state, including North Carolina," Moore said in a press release.

House Speaker Tim Moore, who is running for Congress, authored a letter asking Governor Cooper to "stand in solidarity" with Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The letter also asked Cooper to send National Guard troops to Texas.

The letter was signed by all 72 NC House Republicans, according to a press release from Moore.

The demands were similar to a measure House Republicans filed in the last session. House Bill 10 would require county sheriff's departments to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly referred to as ICE.

The bill passed in the House in March 2023, and it was referred to a Senate committee.

Some advocates expressed concern that the measure could exacerbate hate against immigrant communities.

Moore announced that his campaign for Congress raised $1.4 Million in the first 60 days.
