UNC Asheville Chancellor Nancy J. Cable has announced her intention to step down from her role effective December 31, 2022.

“From the day I joined the UNC Asheville academic community in the summer of 2018, I have been inspired by our dedicated and highly talented faculty and staff, and constantly impressed by our smart, curious, and creative students and student leaders,” Cable said in a message to the campus community.

A press release from the university lists Cable's greatest legacy on campus as the Revitalization Plan.

The plan strengthened revenue and plans to add four new master’s degree programs, and broadened regional connections. One new masters program has been added at this time. The state legislature also contributed $10 million to support the plan and agreed to provide $7 million annually. There is no current end date for the annual recurring funds.

Former UNC Asheville Board of Trustees chair Rick Lutovsky highlighted Cable's work on the Centennial Campaign, a capital campaign that has already raised more than $43 million, and a revamped Advancement office.

“These efforts in their entirety exemplify Chancellor Cable’s vision and success as a leader who identified challenges and then provided solutions,” said Lutovsky, who co-led the search effort that hired Cable, in a press release. “For instance, the master’s degree program in public health in partnership with the Gillings School of Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill is now a reality,” adding that Cable alsohelped secure a $1 million gift for UNCA's study abroad program.

Cable is taking a position as Executive Director of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust, based in Chapel Hill in January 2023, but will advise the Interim Chancellor of UNCA on an call basis through July 31, 2023.

Interim provost, Dr. Kim van Noort has been appointed as the Interim Chancellor.

A previous version of this article described the Revitalization Plan as a strategic plan. We have removed that reference to clarify it is separate from UNCA’s strategic plan. We also clarified that one of four new Master’s programs have been created. The story has been updated to add additional recurring funding from the state legislature and the name of the interim chancellor.
