Introducing WMQS 88.5 FM Murphy

WCQS, Western North Carolina Public Radio, Inc. can now be heard on WMQS 88.5 FM. The new station serves Cherokee County, including Murphy, Andrews and Brasstown, as well as parts of Clay County and in Georgia, parts of Union County, Fannin County and Towns County.

The launch of WMQS brings a three year process to fruition. Western North Carolina Public Radio President and CEO, Jody Evans says, “No other public radio station reliably serves this part of Western North Carolina and it is a testament to the vision and mission of WCQS and the desire of local residents that we’re now broadcasting here. Public Radio serves a unique role in the American media landscape – with its commitment to in-depth news, civil discussion and exploration of complex issues and its varied blend of entertainment and culture found nowhere else. The people of Cherokee County have asked for and deserve this service. Many community leaders wrote letters of support for our FCC application. We look forward not only to serving the region, but to sharing the stories of residents here with our listeners across Western North Carolina.”

Bill Forsyth, a member of the Cherokee County Economic Development Commission, and who has been integral in making WMQS a reality, says “It is great for Cherokee County to finally be getting WMQS and its quality public radio programming. This is a great resource that our citizens have been looking forward to and that tourists expect to find in a community.”

The WMQS transmitter is located on Fain Mountain and should have a clear signal throughout Cherokee County
