Longtime WCQS friend David Holt was in the studio with Dick Kowal today to talk about his upcoming performance in Cullowhee this Sunday at the Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center at Western Carolina University. David is a traditional music and storytelling icon, and four-time Grammy Award winner and Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame inductee.
“David Holt’s State of Music ― Live” will bring ballads, bluegrass, gospel and folk music to the stage at 3 pm. The first live concert version of the popular television show will be videotaped as a companion piece to the PBS series of the same name. Performers are:
- Rhiannon Giddons of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, receiving international popular and critical acclaim for her solo efforts.
- Balsam Range, the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2015 vocal group of the year and song of the year recipients.
- Josh Goforth, rising acoustic music star, Grammy nominee and old-time and bluegrass multi-instrumental virtuoso.
- The Branchettes, featuring Wilbur Tharpe and Lena Mae Perry performing African-American congregational hymns and gospel music.
