Your Vote: Asheville City Board of Education

BPR News

Four candidates are competing for three seats.

eliminating the racial achievement and opportunity gaps in ACS

What three words would you use to describe your political values?

honesty, accountability, equity

What do you wish the community knew about this office?

Whether you have school-aged children or not, public school systems are critical partners in communities, as the students who come through our school doors also work in our neighborhoods, and use our city and county services. How we cultivate and prepare them for life after school is the largest determinant of how strong, welcoming, prosperous and healthy our communities will be in the future. So who sits on the school board is just as important as the elected offices farther up the ballot.

What is one thing that you want to say to voters?

The NC General Assembly continues to underfund our public schools by holding down teacher salaries and refusing to comply with the NC Supreme Court ruling to fund the Leandro decision. This dereliction of duty puts the onus of school funding on county governments, which therefore puts the onus on property owners, since property taxes are how local governments supplement state funding. Since I believe education is the foundation of our democracy, I ask you to vote up and down the ballot with education and our children in mind.

School board members are not limited to hiring or firing the Superintendent. School boards can effectively build up our school district and improve outcomes for everyone. It's not a zero-sum game that requires winners and losers.
