Crews have secured the flow of gas from a leak in downtown Asheville, according to Enbridge Gas North Carolina spokesperson Persida Montanez.
At 7 p.m. Monday, crews stopped the leak at 48 College Street. The issue was caused by third-party damage to a gas line, Montanez said in an email.
"Crews will remain onsite to conduct repairs and restore natural gas service to the customers who are impacted," Montanez wrote.
Occupants of downtown Asheville buildings in the commercial business district were evacuated Monday afternoon as a strong odor of gas hung in the air for several blocks.
"At 3:12 p.m. we received a call for a potential gas leak at 27 N Lexington Ave," a spokesperson for the Asheville Fire Department told BPR by email.
The gas company evaluated the situation and determined it was an underground gas leak.
This was a developing story and was updated.
