Municipalities throughout Western North Carolina will hold events on Tuesday to honor the country’s military veterans.

Veterans Day, a federally recognized holiday, is recognized on Nov. 11. It was originally known as Armistice Day in 1919 by then U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who issued a proclamation encouraging Americans to commit themselves to peace and honor the country’s veterans.

In observance of the holiday, banks as well as city and county offices throughout the region will be closed.

All United States Post Offices will also be closed.

City and county agencies will resume regular operating hours on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
