Nashville-based HCA Healthcare, which operates Asheville’s Mission Hospital and five other hospitals in Western North Carolina, reported Friday that it made $2.27 billion in profits in the three-month period that ended Sept. 30, triple the amount in the same period last year.

Members of the National Nurses United Union at Mission Hospital marched outside the building Thursday morning, asking for a solution to a staff shortage across departments.

Dozens of nurses gathered including a person dressed in a death costume with a sign reading “Unsafe staffing is good for business.” Others were dressed in scrubs, coats and masks.

Elizabeth Binzel is a nurse from the cardiac unit. She says she worked two 15 hours shifts last week - both without a break.  

“That is in no way safe for our patients to have nurses that exhausted,” said Binzel.

Jessica Vaughn, a 33-year-old mother of five, was found dead in her Asheville apartment. The cause: COVID-19.

Brianna Justus, a 31-year-old expectant mother, went from healthy to COVID intensive care patient at Mission Hospital in less than a week. Her baby, delivered by emergency cesarean section, survived. Brianna Justus did not.

On the heels of  Monday’s FDA approval of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for people 16 and older,  Pardee UNC Health Care  in Hendersonville updated its policy,  announcing  all employees will be required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.  A statement by Pardee says the new mandate gives employees until November 12 to comply or submit their request for a medical or religious exemption.   Previously, the hospital encouraged, but didn’t mandate the vaccination.


A class-action lawsuit alleges that HCA Healthcare, the for-profit owner of Mission Health, is using a monopoly to charge more while providing poorer quality of care.

Registered nurses at Mission Hospital in Asheville agreed on their first union contract.

The three-year deal increases wages, guarantees breaks, mandates nurses must be given PPE and free access to COVID-19 testing.  It also forms a Professional Practice Committee to review staff levels.

Registered nurses at Mission Hospital in Asheville have announced a tentative agreement on a contract with HCA. The deal will be shared with the nurses' union this week.  The negotiating team is recommending for the nurses to approve the deal.  Details about the contract will be shared after the vote. Mission Hospital nurses joined National Nurses United in September 2020.

Quality Of Care Concerns Rise At Mission Hospital

Forrest Johnson fell in her garden on April 22 and broke her leg in two places. Her husband and stepdaughter rushed the 68-year-old former nurse to the Mission Hospital emergency room in Asheville from their home near Burnsville, about an hour’s drive. They arrived around 8 p.m.

Profits Up At HCA, Ratings Down At Mission

HCA Healthcare, which owns and operates Mission Hospital in Asheville, reported this month that it made $1.4 billion in profits for the first three months of 2021, more than double the amount for the same period last year. 

Buncombe County will lower capacity limits for indoor dining and gatherings at the beginning of January, as COVID-19 cases continue to increase in the county at greater levels.
